Scuba diving is regulated to ensure the safety of divers and the protection of marine environments. Here are the key regulations and recommendations you need to know:
Dive Insurance: Instructors must have dive insurance, and only they are covered by insurance policies. We recommend DAN Insurance, widely recognized internationally, offering both short-term and annual plans for divers, along with general travel insurance. For more information, visit their website - DAN.ORG
Certification Requirements: Non-certified divers can do a Discover Dive session which means that one can take a simple class that is about an hour to learn the basics and dive under the supervision of the instructor for the week that they are on vacation for example. Until Open Water certified, you must take this class each time that you want to dive, not matter how many dives you have made. There are several ways that you can go about getting your certifications. For more information visit the PADI or SSI websites.
Underwater Cameras: Non-certified divers are NOT permitted to handle a camera nor is the instructor allowed to handle a camera or manage your camera as they need to focus entirely on your safety.
Dive Permits: Some areas, especially marine parks and protected reserves like Cozumel Marine Park and Banco Chinchorro, require special permits. These permits are often arranged through dive operators (DIVE Magazine) (Girls that Scuba).
Environmental Protection: Divers are expected to follow strict guidelines to protect the marine ecosystem. This includes not touching or taking marine life, avoiding contact with corals, and not disturbing the natural habitat. Conservation programs, such as those in Akumal, encourage participation in reef restoration and monitoring projects (Yunglava).
Safety Protocols: Dive shops and operators must adhere to safety standards, providing pre-dive briefings, maintaining proper equipment, and ensuring that all divers follow safety procedures. This includes having dive plans, buddy systems, and emergency protocols in place (PADI).
By following these regulations and guidelines, divers can safely enjoy the rich underwater experiences that Mexico has to offer while contributing to the preservation of its marine environments.
